In this paper, the author mainly reviewed six physiological functions of astrocytes and then listed some over-expressed proteins related to the activation of astrocytes in the pathological process of stroke. At last, the author gave a comment on the cell therapy by transplanting modified astrocytes. In the opinion of the author, since the mechanism of protein expression in astrocytes is complex and the same molecule may presents different roles in different situations, the molecular therapy would be an unpredictable effect for brain stroke treatment. However, cell therapy will be a promising treatment mean in clinic in the future. For now, the foremost problem is to research the changes of astrocytes’ functions and their roles during the development progress of stroke.
