Specialties: Glutamatergic mechanisms underlying brain injuries following middle cerebral artery occlusion; role of oxytocin in cesarean section-associated lactation failure.

 

 

Summary of research work: My previous studies focused on neurochemical mechanisms underlying brain injuries following middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in rat models. I identified that the MCAO-induced brain injury is positively associated with activation of the paraventricular nucleus in MCAO rats, which is likely mediated by glutamate activation of N-methyl-D-aspartic acid receptors. Currently, I am interested in exploring mechanisms underlying the brain edema formation. The current project aims to reveal neurochemical mechanisms being responsible for vasopressin hypersecretion that plays primary roles in ischemic brain edema formation and to explore therapeutic potential of inhibiting vasopressin secretion in ischemic stroke.

We are also interested in the role of oxytocin in cesarean section-associated lactation failure. Our lab has identified that intranasally-applied oxytocin can alter supraoptic oxytocin neuron activity and improve cesarean section-elicited milk shortage. We aim to study neurochemical mechanisms of cesarean section-associated lactation failure and provide experimental evidence supporting specific treatment roles of intranasal oxytocin via olfactory bulbs-hypothalamic neuroendocrine route.
